Perinatal infection

Perinatal infection, also known as congenital infection, refers to an infection that occurs during pregnancy or shortly after birth and affects the fetus or newborn. These infections can be transmitted from the mother to the baby through various routes, including the placenta, during delivery, or through breastfeeding.Perinatal infections can be caused by different types of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a common virus that can be transmitted to the fetus if the mother is infected during pregnancy. It can cause various symptoms in the newborn, including hearing loss, vision problems, developmental delays, and liver or spleen enlargement.
